Rebellions are built on hope, but so too are revivals.
For years, fans of Star Wars: The Clone Wars held onto a tiny glimmer of hope that the prematurely-cancelled series would one day be completed, that they would get to see the much talked about Siege of Mandalore on screen someday.
Well, Lucasfilm has answered those fans’ prayers by announcing that TWELVE new episodes of the beloved animated series would be coming to Disney’s upcoming direct-to-consumer streaming service next year. The announcement was made during the Clone Wars’ tenth anniversary panel at San Diego Comic-Con and was, naturally, met with thunderous applause… and a lot of joyful screaming on Twitter. #CloneWarsSaved
The trailer – which had already clocked over two million views at the time of writing – opens with haunting, almost memorial-like sequences of Clone Troopers (the 501st?) walking off into the smoky distance and rows of Clone Trooper helmets, which gradually evolve into the Stormtrooper-like helmets seen in Revenge of the Sith. The voice-overs grow increasingly desperate as blaster and cannon fire begins to fly across the background and the sequence comes to an explosive end moments later.
“A war left unfinished…. until now.”
And with a simple few words in that unforgettable blue font, Dave Filoni and co announced to the world that The Clone Wars is back in business.
The trailer goes on to show Anakin, Obi-Wan and the clones on Fort Anaxes, where they’re preparing to launch one last desperate bid to win the war. The Jedi knights look visibly exhausted as they walk into their meeting with Captain Rex. The years-long war is nearing its end; we are on the cusp of the Battle of Coruscant.
Somewhat irritated, Anakin wonders what was so important that he and Obi-Wan had to be brought all the way back from the front lines. The stunned look on his face when he sees his former apprentice on the hologram says it all: this is a reunion both he and the fans weren’t expecting.
“Hello, Master. It’s been a while.”
What a heartwarming end to a tenth anniversary panel. Who knew that we would get the chance to laugh and cry over new episodes of The Clone Wars years after the show’s cancellation? Sadly, the panel wasn’t live-streamed but a great summary of the event can be found on StarWars.com, courtesy of Dan Brooks. And you can find an in-depth analysis of the new trailer over on ScreenRant.com.
